As Zoe was first up to shoot the right to left crossing target; Iwan steps up to have a go at target number two: The Single Driven Clay (page 36 in the book). Firstly we go through the preparation ’The four point plan of the Method’ Where is the best kill point? How should we place our feet? Where is the most efficient pick up point? What is the kill picture?
Iwan decides he is going to kill the target at about 70/80 degrees in front of him, then sets his feet in the five past eleven position facing the trap position. he has chosen a pick up point just above the bank where the target will appear to ensure that he will see the clay clearly when he calls “Pull” He wants lots of reassurance that the kill picture really is a picture of hiding the clay: “You mean I won’t be able to see the target when I am squeezing the trigger!”.
“Correct Iwan; you must push the barrels in front of the clay so that the barrels have hidden it; push to ’Blot’ it out. Pick up the target; move the barrels with the target; ’Push’ the barrels with you left hand, blot it out and fire!”.
Iwan is determined to succeed; he is very conscious that Zoe fared so well on the first target. he verbalizes the sequence of the method out loud a few times. Finally he sets himself up; takes a deep breath and call “Pull”.
Smash ! He blows the first clay to dust ! He is elated; and calls for another, Smash ! Another puff of dust; then another and another. Then he misses one, and has to be reminded about the importance of locking the gun tightly into his cheek. Calls “Pull” again and kills another Driven target: Iwan likes this one and is very happy.
Now it is Zoe’s turn. She takes a very careful approach and asks for the sequence to be explained to her a few times. She eventually calls for her first target; but misses. Then misses a couple more. She is reminded about locking the gun stock tightly into her cheek, and resisting the very strong urge to lift the head to look for the target when it disappears behind the barrels.
She kills her first one then a couple more; but is not totally convinced about the logic of deliberately blotting from view the very object that she is trying to strike. Zoe describes this one as ’Work in progress’ and is very happy to take a rest.
During the next lesson Zoe and Iwan will be introduced to shooting the ’Going Away’ target.
