John King

The Author

John King has over 50 years of shotgun shooting experience, starting as a boy of ten rough shooting in the Warwickshire countryside.

During 25 years in the Royal Navy, many of those spent as a trainer in a vast variety of weaponry, John experienced his first encounter with clay targets, when he was appointed as leadership trainer at the Royal Navy Leadership School.

Shortly after his arrival there, he discovered a clay pigeon trap in a corner of the playing fields. He soon began coaching the students in the skills and pleasures of clay shooting and from then on became totally committed to the sport.

John went on to open up the Royal Navy’s first ever clay shooting venue at Portland in Dorset and was instrumental in getting Clay shooting established as a recognised Royal Navy Sport. When not coaching Naval personnel - he took every opportunity to provide coaching in the Wiltshire countryside near his home, gaining qualification as a C.P.S.A. Coach.

After leaving the Royal Navy in 1987, John and his wife Maureen opened up the now renowned Barbury Shooting School on the same site near his home in Wiltshire.

He soon built up an enviable reputation both Nationally and Internationally for his unique style of coaching. He began writing articles in Shooting magazines and had his first clay shooting book published in 1991.

John’s coaching style is very relaxed and without frills. He is adamant that clay shooting coaching should be simple and most importantly, should always be fun for the pupils. John has taught over 30,000 pupils and has also been required to take his coaching skills to the U.S.A.

John and Maureen sold Barbury Shooting School in 2007 although John very happily remains there as a much sought after Coach.

John’s latest DVD, Shooting From Scratch, was filmed in 2009.

“I’ve been a pupil of John’s for over 2 years and found the Shooting From Scratch DVD really helped me to consolidate the basic skills.”
